Examples of Our Work

Contextual Analysis

The Bridge Network work in collaboration with LSE’s Conflict Research Programme to analyse conflict and local contextual dynamics in South Sudan. They produced this report on local dimensions and governance in South Sudan.

Hunger and Coping Mechanisms

Researchers in the Bridge Network noticed the use of hunger courts during periods of famine-level hunger in South Sudan in 2018. This prompted a significant piece of research and inclusion of questions about hunger courts in the World Food Programme’s South Sudan Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring Survey. The report on its findings can be found here.

Refugees and Returns

Members of our network have also been involved in researching on South Sudanese patterns of displacement and returns. This academic article, published in the Journal of Refugee Studies, is a good example.

Land and Peace

One piece of ongoing research is exploring the relationship between land governance and peace in South Sudan. Over the last two decades, the value and meaning of land ownership has radically changed in South Sudan. We are exploring how this has caused conflict and how this understanding can help build peace. We are writing a report with findings, but we have already starting publishing blogs to share our work.

Measuring Safety and Security

In 2018, the Government of South Sudan signed a peace agreement with many of the armed opposition actors in order to end the five years of national wars. In response, many UN agencies and NGOs, as well as the peacekeeping mission, are investing in support for the peace agreement and for making life for South Sudanese more safe and secure. We are working with an academic at LSE to measure nuanced and practical tools for the monitoring and evaluation of programming that promotes safety and security in South Sudan. The report will be released shortly.
